Journey safely into the heart of the Congo Basin to meet cousins few people ever get to see in the wild–the Critically Endangered Lowland Gorilla–on a Conservation Photo Safari designed to make a difference.

SAFETY: Did you know that there are two countries called “Congo?” We are going to “Republic of the Congo.” It’s a former French colony and is stable and safe for travel. In fact, the people are warm and welcoming. The other is “Democratic Republic of the Congo” or DRC, which is war-torn. Rest assured, we aren’t going there.

WORLD-CLASS WILDLIFE TREKKING: Delve into the fascinating rainforests of the Congo Basin, known as the second lung of the world. An exciting and diverse variety of wildlife inhabits the area, including Forest Elephants, African Grey Parrots, wetlands-adapted Spotted Hyena…and the critically endangered Western Lowland Gorilla. We are guaranteed time with a family of gorillas. Our presence helps conserve these fascinating cousins of ours by habituating them so that veterinary intervention isn’t stressful, and by supporting local people who work in and around the Park. 97% of the employees are Congolese, with over 60% coming directly from the local villages.

LESIO LOUNA: This world-class wildlife reserve is a safe home for orphaned Lowland Gorillas, as well as a wild environment for other animals. Learn about the efforts to save and conserve this incredible species while supporting the communities that surround the Reserve.

THE CONGO RIVER: We will explore this life-giving artery from Brazzaville, visiting villages to learn how living in concert with the water has shaped the Congolese people. The beautiful fishing village of Ngabe nestles at the base of the white cliffs of Manguengue. We’ll go to the market, choose our food, and prepare our meal with locals for an immersive experience of life outside a big city.

BLENDED PHOTO SAFARI AND WORKSHOP: We’ll have enough downtime to have a few basic lessons in how to use the buttons and functions of your camera plus do a little editing in Lightroom together. Karen will make sure even the newest photographer gets great shots, and if you want to bring your non-photographer friends and family, they’ll enjoy this trip just as much as the photographers will. We’ll focus on Conservation Photography and Slice-of-Life (candid moments in the lives of local people) Photography on this safari. If we can tell the story, people will respond.

Health Considerations

You may need a Yellow Fever vaccine to enter the Republic of the Congo. It is a malaria area; please consult with your physician prior to travel. You should be up to date on tetanus prior to travel.

For more information, see your country’s health/travel website, or the CDC website: https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/congo

Expected Weather/Temperatures

We’re going to a rainforest, so we must expect rain. It can be hot, so plan lightweight wicking clothing plus a rain jacket. Sturdy waterproof shoes are suggested.

Electric Adapter

Republic of the Congo uses Type C, D, and E plugs. These are found on most international adapters. You may be able to use an adapter instead of a converter. To be sure, check the label on the appliance. Some appliances never need a converter. If the label states ‘INPUT: 100-240V, 50/60 Hz’ the appliance can be used in all countries in the world. Devices like this include most laptops and phones, most recently produced battery chargers, and many small, electrical gadgets, especially those designed for world travel.

Gratuity Planning (in USD)

You may be able to charge some gratuities to your credit card, but please have cash available for our guides during hikes and treks. Republic of the Congo uses the CFA Franc, linked to the Euro. Please check the exchange rate before departure and plan accordingly. ATMs will be available in Brazzaville and are safe to use with ordinary precautions.

We will have a Ranger and tracker during our Gorilla Treks, a guide for our birdwatching walks, and local guides for other activities. Please plan gratuities of at least $5-20 USD per activity, plus approximately $5/day for hotel staff. Restaurant gratuities should be in the 10-15% range.

Gratuities are always a personal choice. You may tip more or less depending on the quality of service you receive.
