Mountain Gorillas: Once down to just 254 individuals, these endangered apes have made a remarkable recovery in population, numbering just over 1,000 today. Seeing a gorilla family in the wild, guided by the enormous, dominant male silverback, is an experience that will leave you awestruck. You’ll wonder how these gentle vegetarian giants who laugh and play and communicate could have ever been poached, and why they are so protected now. What changed? We will not only learn about the conservation effort, we will be a part of it.

Golden Monkeys: These chubby cheeked gorgeous monkeys are endangered due to human conflict, primarily the destruction of the bamboo and treed forests in which they live. Their bright orange fur contrasts with their black limbs, flashing against the verdant green around them. Several things will hit you as you watch them: they are loud, they are beautiful, they are gregarious, and they talk with their hands, just like most humans! They are a must-see in Rwanda.

The Rich History of Rwanda: From an oral history going back over 10,000 years to the civil war in 1994 that resulted in the failure of the UN to assist as the ruling Hutu class killed close to a million Tutsi people, Rwanda is a country of contradictions and quick growth. The Republic is trying to move forward while preserving a deep, rich historical and cultural background. A high priority has been placed on thoughtful development. Some basic improvements include providing tap water to rural areas and compulsory education for children. Strong environmental protections are being implemented to sustainably manage resources while incentivizing local communities to opt in. A strong middle class is being created. We’ll learn about this fascinating country as we appreciate our time with its unique wildlife.
